As we start 2009, communities across America are feeling the stress of our "new economy." In this episode of The Leader's Toolbox, Dr. Richard B. Gasaway offers his perspective about the challenges fire departments will face and some of the opportunities that may arise. The economy will force change and Dr. Gasaway shares why he believes it is better to be proactive than reactive.
In the second part of this episode Dr. Gasaway takes on a challenging question from a fire officer who is trying to work through a problem with a firefighter who got into trouble while off-duty. The incident involved several firefighters and one of the firefighters lied about what happened to keep from getting into trouble. Now his co-workers say they no longer trust him and feel they cannot work with him. Dr. Gasaway offers advice to the officer for how to facilitate a solution that brings the troubled firefighter together with his accusers to work through the problem and restore a working relationship.
