VT Firefighters Quit Amid Selection of New Chief

Several veteran Fairfax firefighters walked out after an outsider was hired as chief.

Several firefighters have quit after the hiring of a new chief.

They feel a fellow firefighter who has working for the department for 10 years was more deserving, NBC 5 reported.

The resignations came after Micah Genzlinger was selected instead of Battalion Chief Dave Raymond.

They were the only two candidates.

Genzlinger most recently served as the training coordinator with the Vermont Fire Academy and has experience as a USAR rescue specialist.

David Yergeau, who worked for the department for the past 27 years, recently resigned over the decision.

“He does not have the same recommendations or credentials that Dave does. Dave has been doing a great job for the town for the last 10 years and they basically just let him go for no reason,” he said. “We’re standing up for Dave Raymond, our battalion chief, and all the great things he’s done by resigning.”

Select board chair, Steve Cormier, says Genzlinger is “absolutely qualified” for the position.

Since the resignations, the department is now down to 27 firefighters. But, officials don't think service will be impacted.
