Toledo Fire and Rescue Chief Allison Armstrong was seriously injured in a vehicle crash Friday night in Colorado.

Armstrong was headed to the 40th annual IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service when her vehicle slammed into a concrete barrier after being hit by one traveling at a high rate of speed, WTOL reported.

The driver fled the scene but was apprehended and charged with driving under the influence and other offenses.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Armstrong wrote: "I was hit on the rear left side of my SUV by a vehicle that I saw behind me a millisecond before it plowed into me at what I estimate to be at least 80mph which pushed me forward, turned my vehicle to the right and directly into the concrete barrier wall, then spinning me around the opposite direction. I am hoping the police department can pull additional information and evidence regarding the accident.

Thank god for air bags. Thank god for seatbelts. Thank god my vehicle didn’t flip. Thank god everyone behind me was able to stop or move into another lane without also striking me. I have a lot of injuries from this accident but am truly grateful it wasn’t worse and no one else was hurt.

I have a fractured sternum, fractured back, whiplash, many contusions, swelling and pain to every area along the seatbelt line."

Armstrong also thanked Aurora Fire Rescue personnel for their care as well as Aurora police for apprehended the driver who struck her vehicle. 

Toledo Local 92 firefighters, who also were in Colorado for the service, spent time with the chief in the hospital.

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz wrote in a statement: "Chief Armstrong is tough and resilient, and I have no doubt she will get through this and be back at work as soon as she can. Everyone in the City of Toledo wishes her well for a speedy recovery.”
