Virginia Firefighter Found Dead in Station

Horace "Chris" Pendergrass, 49, was found in the bunkroom of Station 41 at about 8:30 a.m., according to WJLA.com.

Pendergrass, a 20-plus year veteran with the department, was originally from Chesapeake, Va.

A fire department spokesperson told local media that while nothing appears suspicious, the death remains under investigation.

There was no word on whether he had responded to an emergency during his shift.

Under the federal Hometown Heroes Act, if a firefighter dies of a heart attack or stroke within 24 hours of an emergency response or training it is considered to be in line-of-duty.

The family will receive friends at the Everly Funeral Home, 10565 Main Street, Fairfax on Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 6 until 8 p.m.,

Funeral services with honors will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. at Greater Little Zion Baptist Church, 10185 Zion Drive, Fairfax, Va.

Interment will follow at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Firefighters Fund of Fairfax County, PO Box 401, Fairfax, Va. 22038-0401 or Prince of Peace Church, 1543 Summit Avenue, Portsmouth, Va. 23704
