A Cape May firefighter died Monday while returning from a gymnasium, according to The Cape May County Herald.

Lt. Andy Boyt, 47, stopped his car on Route 9 and Jaden Road at approximately 3:45 p.m., and a passenger in the car administered CPR.

EMTs arrived at the scene and continued to try to revive him as he was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center but were unsuccessful.

The 17-year veteran had been a member of both volunteer and career departments during his career and also served as the city's Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator.

"It has been my pleasure to have known Andy for many years and found him to be a very dedicated, experienced and well trained city public safety official as well as a fellow citizen who exemplifies outstanding integrity, hard work and love for the City of Cape May," Mayor Edward J. Manahey Jr. told the newspaper.

The USFA reported that Boyt had responded to fire calls on his shift just prior to his death.

Visitation and a funeral service will be held in the performing arts center at Lower Cape May Regional High School, 687 Route 9 North in Erma. Visitation is scheduled for Oct. 7 from 6 to 9 pm.

The funeral service will be held Oct. 8 at 11:30 a.m.
