A captain with the Elmwood Park Fire Department collapsed and died Dec. 28 at home after completing a stand-by at the fire station.

Capt. Ken Adamo, 48, was one of several firefighters who stayed at the station during the snowstorm, according to Elmwood Fire Marshal Pompei D'Arco.

The crew handled one call -- to check out a smoke detector sounding -- during that period.

"He was one of the best," D'Arco said of Adamo. "They don't come any better."

Before volunteering at Elmwood Park, he was actively involved with the Garfield Fire Company where he also was a captain.

Adamo also was a detective for 25 years for the Garfield Police Department. He was a life member of Garfield Fire Department and the Garfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Funeral Information

Visitation for Capt. Adamo will be held from Thursday, Dec. 30 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Marrocco Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at St. Leo's Roman Catholic Church.
