A firefighter from Liberty Hose Co. No. 1 in Williamstown died following an apparent heart attack at the station this morning.

Firefighter Douglas L. Smith, 50, was entering the station at approximately 10:30 a.m. to drive the apparatus when he collapsed, according to Fire Chief Scott Slough.

After his comrades made unsuccessful attempts to revive him, Smith was pronounced dead.

Slough said it is believed that Smith went into cardiac arrest and that an autopsy is set for next week.

"He's well known by many firefighters all over Dauphin County," he said.

Smith served with the fire department for 29 years and also served with the EMS department during that time as well.

The department is currently being debriefed and plans will be made to hold a firefighter funeral with the family's blessing.
