A Scales Mound firefighter was killed in an ATV crash while responding to a search and rescue incident on May 22, according to the USFA.
Firefighter Kurt M. Meusel, 25, was traveling on North Mill Creek Road at approximately 9:14 p.m. when he hit a deer, causing the ATV to veer into a ditch, the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Department told The Telegraph Herald.
Meusel's vehicle rolled several times, and he was later pronounced dead on the scene.
