The chief of the Crow Roost Fire Department suffered a fatal heart attack while en route to a structure fire yesterday, according to the USFA.

Chief Paul Johnson, 63, was operating the department's pumper when he became ill and asked Capt. Cheri Poindexter -- who was riding in the cab -- to take the wheel as he slumped over and became unresponsive, the report states.

Poindexter was able to stop the pumper on Sooner Road and called a "Mayday" over the radio. Another apparatus from the department stopped to render aid with an AED they had on board.

The firefighters worked on the chief for 20 minutes until an ambulance arrived and transported him to the Carnegie Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
