INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- The fire department here is reeling from the loss of their lieutenant. Lt. Edward Teare, 53, was stricken following training, and died Wednesday afternoon, according to a firefighter who answered the phone at the station.The Independence Fire Department is a combination department. Teare was a career firefighter.

In a prepared statement issued Wednesday night, Independence Mayor Gregory P. Kurtz said: "The Independence Fire Department has suffered a loss of one of its team members after 30 years of service. The cause of death is yet to be determined. The thoughts and prayers of the Fire Department family, his City co-workers, and those of the entire community of Independence go out to Lt. Teare’s family and friends. As more details become available they will be released."
