Wellington-Greer, Ill. Assistant Chief John William Jeffers suffered an apparent fatal heart attack and was found dead at his home on April 2, less than 24 hours after a shift, according to the USFA.
Jeffers, 54, was testing fire hose with other firefighters following a meeting at the station at April 1. After reloading the hose on an engine, he sat on the tail board of the apparatus and said he didn't feel well and asked to be taken home.
When a friend stopped by the following afternoon, there was no response at the door. After the fire department was call, access was gained and Jeffers was discovered dead.
Funeral services were held the morning of April 6.
