MELBOURNE, Fla. --

A Melbourne fire lieutenant died unexpectedly at his fire station Thursday night less than an hour after fighting a blaze at a downtown office complex, officials said.

Robert Strang, a 29-year veteran of the Melbourne Fire Department, was discovered unresponsive in his quarters by another lieutenant at Fire Station 74 in Melbourne. He was found about 40 minutes after returning from a structure fire.

Firefighters tried to resuscitate Strang, who was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

Strang did not have any complaints prior to returning to the fire station, officials said.

Strang began his career with the Melbourne Fire Department in February 1980.

Strang is survived by an 18-year-old son and was scheduled to retire at the end of this year, the fire department said.
