The state's firefighting Medal of Honor was presented to the families of Paul Cahill and Warren Payne, Boston firefighters killed in a restaurant fire in August 2007, at the 19th annual Firefighter of the Year Awards.
Also honored were firefighters from Everett, who received the excellence in leadership award for their handling of a fiery tanker truck crash last December. Firefighters deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan were saluted at the Faneuil Hall ceremony.
"I am honored to be able to express my gratitude to these brave individuals and their families," Gov. Deval Patrick said.
