Pennsylvania Assistant Chief Collapses, Dies

He was found unresponsive in the kitchen of the fire house.

DERRY BOROUGH, PA. -- An assistant fire chief collapsed in the fire house here Saturday while on duty.

Vince Germano had responded on an automatic fire alarm, and returned to the station. Shortly thereafter, the company was dispatched to another call.

The assistant chief stayed behind with another crew. When the engine returned, Germano helped get it back in service.

A short time later, fellow firefighters found Germano in the kitchen in cardiac arrest. They immediately initiated CPR, and called for paramedics. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday from 7-9 p.m.., and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7- 9 p.m. A firefighter memorial service is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at Shoemaker Funeral Home, Blairsville..

The funeral is set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Sts. Simon and Jude Church in Blairsville. Interment will be held in the church cemetery.
