NIOSH Probe of Fatal Louisiana Crash Released

Sept. 22, 2008
His chief's last words were "be safe."

NIOSH has concluded its investigation of a tanker crash in March that claimed the life of a Louisiana firefighter.

On March 28, Eric Speed, 33, was driving a tanker en route to a structure fire in a neighboring jurisdiction when it veered off the road on a curve. The vehicle overturned and struck several trees.

He was wearing a seat belt, and was pinned in the cab of the rig, NIOSH investigators determined.

When he left the Caddo Parish fire station, the chief told him: "be safe."
