West Virginia Firefighter Killed in Crash
CEREDO, W.Va.-- A volunteer firefighter died in a Ceredo automobile accident early Saturday as he drove to another road accident.
Christopher Jaros of the Ceredo Volunteer Fire Department died shortly after 1 a.m. on U.S. Route 60, just west of the Mose A. Napier Bridge in Ceredo, said Clinton Burley, public information officer for the Ceredo Volunteer Fire Department.
The death was the department's first, Burley said.
Emergency medical workers dispatched to the first accident witnessed the accident involving Jaros, Burley said. Jaros was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
A second vehicle was involved in the Jaros accident, Burley said. The driver, who is not being identified pending family notification, was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington.
Jaros had been a volunteer firefighter since March 7, 2004. Burley said did not know Jaros' age. He leaves behind a wife, Sarah, and three children.
The Wayne detachment of the West Virginia State Police is investigating the cause of the accident, Burley said.
The Ceredo Volunteer Fire Department is made up of 55 firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics, Burley said. The department was chartered in 1955 and serves Ceredo and surrounding unincorporated areas of northern Wayne County.
