U.S. Army Sgt. David "Joey" Davis, 32, was killed when an IED detonated near his Stryker armored vehicle.
Firefighters at Lisbon Vol. Fire Company learned of Davis' death Saturday night from his brother, also a volunteer at the Howard County station.
"Joey joined the fire company in 1992, right after he graduated from high school. He was very active, and always came around for calls when he was home on leave," said Capt. Jim Baker.
Davis was remembered for his easygoing attitude, and genuine desire to be part of the team. "He was one of the nicest guys here. He did whatever he could, and you didn't have to ask him," the captain said.
He was a firefighter/EMT, and wouldn't hesitate to hop in to drive the ambulance.
Baker said the volunteers are planning to participate in the escort once they learn when Davis' body is being returned to the United States. They're also keeping in close contact with his family.
Davis was supposed to come home in June. But, his unit was redeployed. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 14th Calvary Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
Baker said it's been a tough couple of days, but the firefighters are pulling together.
