A Virginia EMS captain died in the line of duty early Thursday after suffering a cardiac arrest at the scene of a motor vehicle accident.

EMS Capt. Steve Rosenfeld, 52, joined the Salem Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. in Culpeper, Virginia in 2002.

He had just helped load two patients into an ambulance at about 2:30 a.m. when his colleagues heard him collapse and found him on the ground next to the ambulance, said Chief Mike Bailey. There were several other local fire departments on scene, and emergency officials immediately transported Rosenfeld in a different ambulance to Culpeper Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 3:30 a.m.

Rosenfeld is survived by his wife and three daughters. Bailey said he worked as a home builder and loved hunting and fishing.

In December, Rosenfeld was chosen for the department's Fire Chief's Award and their EMT of the Year award, in addition to the county's EMT of the Year award. Bailey said Rosenfeld was selected because of his enthusiasm in providing EMS.

"Any assignment I ever gave, he just jumped in and didn't look back," the chief said. "He's going to be missed by the whole county."

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Found and Sons Funeral Home in Culpeper, to be followed by the funeral on Monday at 1 p.m.
