Memphis Firefighter Dies While on Duty

A Memphis firefighter on his way back from a routine call collapsed and died Wednesday morning while driving a fire engine.

38-year-old David O'Conner, a 9-year veteran of the department was heading west on 715 St. Paul when he collapsed, drove up on a sidewalk and nearly crashed. A quick-thinking lieutenant was able to climb across the console and take control of the fire truck.

O'Conner died at Methodist Central Hospital. The cause of his collapse is unknown.
