Crawford, of Whitesburg, suffered a heart attack Tuesday while on duty with the fire department.
`Lt. Crawford was a firefighter`s firefighter,` said Gary Thomas, chief of Carroll County Fire Rescue. `He was always there to do what was needed when it was needed.`
Other firefighters, Thomas said, knew that Crawford `would get the job done and get the job done right.`
Crawford was returning to the fire station in a squad truck when he suffered the heart attack early Tuesday afternoon at Old Highway 27 and Highway 5 near Roopville.
The vehicle Crawford was driving careened down an embankment and sustained considerable damage. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Crawford served 26 years with the county fire department. He was previously a volunteer with Bowdon Volunteer Fire Department.
`He served throughout Carroll County in many different stations and in many different capacities and was currently assigned shift lieutenant at Station No. 4 in Roopville,` Thomas said.
`The fire department and the entire Carroll County community will miss this fine public servant.`
