Collinsville, Oklahoma Firefighter Dies After Vehicle Accident

James Fugate, 20, a volunteer firefighter in the Collinsville, OK Fire Department, died Tuesday, Jan. 11 after succumbing to injuries sustained in a single vehicle accident Dec. 27, 2004, according to Collinsville Fire Chief Russell Young.

Fugate was en route to the fire station to assist in the response to a page out for a smoke investigation when he lost control of his vehicle, causing it to roll and eject him.

A rescue response team from near-by Owasso responded and transported Fugate to the local hospital.

"It was kind of a shock when he passed away because he had been doing fine for some time," Young said. "He broke his femur and his wrist and had some trouble breathing. Eventually he suffered some pretty serious lung problems and went under a couple of times."

Fugate had been a volunteer firefighter with the department for two and a half years, according to Young.

Funeral Arragements

The funeral will take place on Friday, January 14 at 2 p.m. at The Freewill Baptist Church, 156 Hwy 169, Collinsville, Oklahoma.

A memorial fund has been set up in memory of Firefighter James Fugate, at c/o Collinsville Fire Department, 1202 West Main, Collinsville, Oklahoma 74021.
