The Schoharie County firefighter who died in the line of duty last Thursday was laid to rest Monday morning. Funeral services were held this morning for Jeffrey Howell at the Zion Lutheran Church in Seward.
Firefighter Jeffrey W. Howell, age 42, collapsed at the scene of the fire at 503 Gilberts Corners Road, in the town of Sharon Thursday night. Howell was one of the first member of the Sharon Springs Volunteer Fire Department to arrive at the scene of the fire at approximately 5:18pm. Howell was fighting the fire outside of the building when he fell to the ground, from what was apparently heat exhaustion. Officials now confirm that Howell died of a heart attack.
An investigation of his death is being conducted by Coroner Joseph Luz, State and Federal Fire Officials. Howell is the first line of duty fire death in Schoharie County since 1990.
Howell had been a member of the Sharon Springs Fire Department since November 2003 and before that he had served with the Carlisle Fire Department since 1994.
