An Old Bridge volunteer rescue worker was struck by a car and killed last night when he stopped to help at the scene of a minor accident on Route 9 in the township, police said.

James Dodridge, 52, a member of the Old Bridge First Aid and Rescue Squad, was struck shortly before 7 p.m. near Ferry Road, according to Lt. Chester Popek. A woman involved in the three-car accident suffered a heart attack and also died, police said.

Dodridge was on his way to the rescue squad building in response to the accident when he parked his car in the grassy median of the highway, the lieutenant said. Dodridge was struck as he attempted to cross the northbound lanes on foot to reach the accident.
