Wisconsin Firefighter Dies After Responding, Assisting

Birchwood Fire Capt. Jack Colbert was manning communications for a water rescue incident when he fell ill.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday for a Wisconsin firefighter who died at home Friday after becoming ill at the fire station while handling communications.

Birchwood Fire Dept. Capt. John "Jack" Colbert, 60, responded to the station for a drowning, and manned the radio until he fell ill.

He went home, and died of a cause yet to be determined.

Colbert had been with the fire department since 1973.

Visitation will be held from 4-9 p.m. Monday at Appleyard Home for Funerals in Rice Lake. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Birchwood.
