A Connecticut firefighter collapsed Sunday evening behind the wheel of an ambulance in the fire station.
Redding Fire Lt. G. Marshall Sanford, was a former fire chief and 50-year veteran firefighter, according to The News-Times.
Sanford was found unresponsive in the fire department ambulance that he was going to take to a brush fire call.
The company was dispatched to the call at about 6:30 p.m
"Our condolences and prayers go out to the first lieutenant's family in their hour of sorrow," according to a statement released by the volunteer department.
The newspaper also reported that Sanford was a former national president of the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America, and received the organization's most distinguished award, the William L. Robinson Award.
He was a part-time EMT for Redding EMS.
