Cypress Forest Fire Claims Two Firefighters

A third firefighter was seriously injured after the apparatus rolled 90 feet down a gully.

Two firefighters have died after their fire apparatus went off the road during a massive forest fire in the southwest part of the country. 

Andreas Sofokleous, 49, died when the fire engine rolled 90 feet down a gully. Marios Aristotelous died from his injuries the following day.

A third firefighter is in critical condition, according to GreekReporter.com.

The fire is burning near Hagia Irene, Kannavia and Spilia.

In a statement, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said officials “express our deepest condolences to the relatives of tragically lost Andreas Sofokleous to whom the state will stand by.”

Sofokleous leaves behind five children.
