MS Chief Dies from Medical Emergency at Car Fire

Bobby Dunnaway, the longtime chief for the Howell Volunteer Fire Department, collapsed while at the scene of a burning car in late December.

A Mississippi fire chief suffered a medical emergency and died while working to put out a burning car Sunday night.

Chief Bobby Dunnaway, the longtime head of the Howell Volunteer Fire Department, responded to a call concerning a car on fire just before 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, WLOX-TV reports. While he was helping to fight the blaze, Dunnaway collapsed from an undetermined medical emergency and was later pronounced dead.

The U.S. Fire Administration, which had been affected by the 35-day government shutdown, announced Chief Dunnaway's line-of-duty death on Monday.

Area fire departments and others offered their condolences to Dunnaway's family on the Mississippi Fire Chief Association's Facebook page.

According to the USFA, the 72-year-old Dunnaway was a 37-year veteran of the fire service.
