A New Jersey volunteer firefighter died Monday after he had a heart attack following a department training drill.

John "Jack" Leming, a member of Cape May Point Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, participated in a drill at the fire station at around 7 p.m., according to a release by the U.S. Fire Administration. Leming, 78, returned home after the exercise, but he became ill during the night, prompting his wife to call 9-1-1.

As he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, Leming went into cardiac arrest, the fire administration stated. Life-saving measures were taken, but they weren't successful, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, the agency added.
