A Florida fire training instructor died following a heart attack he suffered after a training exercise earlier this month.

Plantation Lt. Barry Boulton, a basic training lead instructor, collapsed after finishing a Rapid Intervention Team drill May 7, the U.S. Fire Administration said. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died from cardiac arrest, according to the agency.

Boulton, 67, was a retired U.S. Marine colonel and a retired Hollywood police detective, the Plantation Fire Department stated in an online update.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and the (fire) department during this difficult time, and we thank him for his service," the Hollywood Police Department stated on its Facebook page.
