PA Firefighter Dies after Feeling Ill Following Call

Dec. 12, 2019
Morton-Rutledge Capt. Michael Christopher Malinowski Sr., 41, had said he wasn't feeling well after responding to a call involving downed wires and trees last week.

A Pennsylvania firefighter died from an apparent medical emergency following a call last week.

Morton-Rutledge Capt. Michael Christopher Malinowski Sr., 41, responded to a report of downed wires and trees just after 8 p.m. Dec. 2 in Nether Providence, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. After returning to the station, he told officers he was feeling sick, and it's believed he suffered a heart attack.

“He went to work the next morning (Dec. 3), had tightness in his chest and was taken to the hospital, where he died,” Morton-Rutledge Fire Chief Don Holstein told the Delaware County Daily Times.

Malinowski had served with the department for five years. He previously had been a firefighter in Gloucester City, NJ.

A funeral service will be held Saturday in Holmes, and the burial will be private. Gov. Tom Wolf is ordering flags be flown at half-staff on that day.

Malinowski is survived by his wife, Melissa Anne, and five children, who range in age from 3 to 17.
