NC Firefighter Dies after Medical Emergency During Call

Thoroughfare Safety Officer Joe Tucker was part of the response to a structure fire when he suffered the medical emergency Sunday, according to reports.

A North Carolina firefighter died after suffering a medical emergency during a call Sunday morning.

Thoroughfare Safety Officer Joe Tucker, 62, was part of the response to a structure fire when the unspecified medical emergeny happened, the department announced in an online update. He was taken to Wayne UNC Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials told WRAL-TV that Tucker's cause of death would not be released out of respect for his family.

"We send our thoughts and prayers to the family as our hearts mourn for such a huge loss in this big family," the Wayne County Firefighters' Association said in an online state. "Rest In Peace, we got it from here."

Tucker was married and had children and grandchildren. His family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church, 202 Providence Church Road, Goldsboro, and a service to celebrate Tucker's life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with a burial and fire department honors to follow at the church cemetery.
