A Michigan public safety officer suffered a fatal heart attack hours after helping remove a fallen tree over the weekend.
Bloomfield Hills Sgt. Steven Splan was on fire duty at around noon Sunday when he was part of the response to move a tree blocking a road, the U.S. Fire Administration said in an alert. Later that night, Splan was found unresponsive in the department's kitchen, where he had gone for a meal break.
Colleagues performed CPR on Splan, and he was taken to the hospital. He was later pronounced dead from an apparent heart attack, according to the USFA.
"Sgt. Splan was known for his quick whit, infectious smile and genuine concern for others," the department stated in an online update. "Sgt. Splan has been with the Department for 15 years and served in a variety of roles during his tenure. Most of all, Sgt. Splan had an unbridled passion to serve his community."
Splan is survived by a wife and four daughters.
