A firefighter was killed in helicopter crash while battling wildfires in Oregon on Monday.
The crash happened while the helicopter—a Type 1 Kmax—was conducting bucket drops on the White River Fire in Mt. Hood National Forest in Wasco County, the U.S. Forest Service said in a statement. The firefighter's identity hasn't been released.
"The firefighting community is heartbroken to learn of this tragic loss and our condolences go out to the pilot's family, friends, and co-workers," the forest service said.
Air and ground resources from the Waco Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Forest Service responded to the crash site. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating the accident.
The White River Fire began Aug. 17 and had spread across rough terrain. So far, the fire has burned more than 1,000 acres and is 5 percent contained, according to KGW-TV.
