A Kansas volunteer firefighter was killed in a traffic accident while responding to a call Sunday.

The crash involved Easton Township firefighter Johnny Ivison Jr., who was headed to a structure fire in Easton, the department said in a post on social media. Ivison's Chevrolet Silverado went off the road, and he was ejected from the truck when he tried to overcorrect, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Department officials were told about the fatality while firefighters were at the scene. Ivinson was part-time technician for the department and also worked full-time for the state.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the firefighter and to the other members of the department as we are one family," the department said.

Ivison, 23, is survived by his wife and two young sons. A fundraiser has been started to help his family, and by Monday afternoon, it has raised more than $2,000 of its $5,000 goal.

"Anyone you ask will tell you he was a good guy, guaranteed to make you laugh," the online posting for the fundraiser stated.

Information concerning funeral arrangements will be provided later, the department added.
