Sean Laffan, the Oakland Fire Department Assistant Chief, died of a heart attack Monday evening, officials said. He was 42 years old.
Laffan collapsed in the office of the fire department's administrative building at about 5 p.m. Monday, Oakland Fire officials said. Staff on site began performing life-saving measures until he was taken by ambulance to Summit Medical Center.
At 10:15 p.m., he suffered a prolonged cardiac arrest, and his heart function never returned despite resuscitation efforts, officials said. His family was notified, and they were met at the hospital by Oakland Fire staff and department leaders.
Laffan joined the Oakland Fire Department in 2000 and was promoted to interim assistant chief in June 2020. He is survived by his parents, his wife, Sabrina, and his three sons, Caeden, Connor, and Cooper. His son, Caeden, is a probationary firefighter in the Oakland Fire Department.
