Longtime IL Firefighter Dies of Heart Attack after Call

Scales Mound Fire Capt. Leo W. Werner, 67, suffered a fatal heart attack last week after he returned home from responding to a medical emergency call.

An Illinois firefighter died of an apparent heart attack following a call last week.

Scales Mound Fire Capt. Leo W. Werner, 67, was part of a response to a medical emergency at around 10 p.m. Wednesday, the department stated in an online update. Once he returned home, he suffered a heart attack, and 9-1-1 was called.

Members of Werner's department, as well as medics from Galena EMS and Elizabeth EMS responded to the firefighter's home. He was then taken to Midwest Medical Center in Galena, but he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight Thursday.

Werner had been a member of the Scales Mound Fire Protection District for 46 years. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1972 until 1974, and he worked at Kelly-Springfield Tire Co. in Freeport for 30 years until his retirement.
