GA Battalion Chief Suffers Fatal Heart Attack

Heard County Battalion Chief James Guiler was found unresponsive during a 24-hour shift when he didn't show up at the apparatus after a call came in.

A veteran Georgia firefighter who was working an overtime shift was found by colleagues after a fatal heart attack.

The U.S. Fire Administration announced the line-of-duty death of Heard County Fire & Emergency Services Battalion Chief James "JB" Bernard Guiler, who suffered the suspected cardiac event early Thursday morning.

According to the USFA, Guiler was working a 24-hour overtime shift and was dispatched on a call at about 5:50 am, but he didn't arrive at the apparatus as it was prepping to depart. Crews went to wake Guiler and found him dead.

The 55-year-old had been with the department for 10 years.
