Veteran IN Firefighter Succumbs to COVID-19

Elwood firefighter Mark Gillam, 58, died Sunday after battling COVID-19 symptoms beginning in late August before being placed on a ventilator.

A veteran firefighter in north-central Indiana has died after battling COVID-19 for over a month.

The Elwood, IN, Fire Department announced in a Facebook post that firefighter Mark Gillam, 58, died on Sunday of complications related to the virus after being placed on a ventilator and into a medically induced coma.

"Please keep Mark's family in your thoughts and prayers as well as our city family, as we mourn the loss of our colleague," the post says.

Gillam was a 31-year veteran of the department.
