Retired AZ Fire Captain Loses Battle with Cancer

Nov. 16, 2021
Mesa Fire Capt. Trevor Madrid, who was forced into retirement by his cancer diagnosis, died Sunday after a multi-year battle with synovial sarcoma.

Members of the Mesa Fire Department are mourning the passing of one of their own after retired Capt. Trevor Madrid died Sunday after a long battle with cancer.

Madrid was forced into retirement due to his diagnosis in March 2019 after being a firefighter for more than a decade.

Forrest Smith, a spokesman for the Mesa FD, told AZcentral that the department is considering Madrid’s passing a line of duty death. Smith said Madrid’s cancer was a "result of exposures he received on the job as a firefighter that led to cancer and other complications exacerbated by his condition."

“It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of retired Captain Trevor Madrid," the department said on Facebook. "Trevor passed away yesterday late afternoon surrounded by family, friends, and members of our department who shared in our love and support for Trevor.”

The Mesa Fire Department is currently working to facilitate the needs of Trevor’s family as they get closer to his memorial services.
