An Indiana firefighter was killed early Saturday while responding to a call for a vehicle stranded in high water after a storm.
Just after midnight, the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a storm-related call.
About 20 minutes later, local sheriff's deputies were alerted about another vehicle that had gone off the same road and struck a tree.
Jackson Township fire and rescue personnel found Posey Firefighter Roy A. Smith, 60, was pinned in the vehicle that had hit the tree, WISH reported.
Firefighters had to extricate him from the wreckage. He died shortly after arriving at a local hospital.
They believe he was headed to the call when the crash occurred.
Since Smith was the Clay County deputy coroner, the Parke County Coroner's office is handling the investigation.
He was the second firefighter to die while responding to an incident.
On Friday, Beaufort-Leslie, MO firefighter Chevy Gall, 16, was killed while responding to a rescue.
His vehicle crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a cargo van.
