West Colesville Fire Chief Dies after Being Stricken at House Fire

West Colesville Fire Chief John Sitek was responding to a house fire in Conklin when he suffered a medical emergency.

A fire chief died after responding to a house fire in Conklin Thursday morning.

Crews were called to the house fire around 3 a.m. when West Colesville Fire Company John Sitek was responding. 

Sitek suffered a medical emergency, according to WBNG.com. He was transported to the hospital where he passed away.

Sitek served as chief of the fire company for the last three years but was a 35-year member.

Firefighters from the Town of Binghamton, Five Mile Point, Hallstead, Kirkwood, West Colesville and West Windsor also responded to the fire, which was contained in an hour.

One resident was injured in the house fire and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
