Tulsa firefighters are mourning the loss of their assistant fire marshal, who had a passion for safety education.
Assistant Fire Marshal Stephen Mixon died after suffering a medical emergency while on duty.
The 28-year veteran of the department, Mixon "worked tirelessly to ensure buildings across our city were safe places for people to live, work, and gather," fire officials wrote in a statement.
"Stephen spent countless hours educating children about fire safety, planning smoke alarm installation events, conducting car seat safety checks, and working to prevent fires before they could happen. His passion for public education and prevention touched thousands of lives across our community."
Funeral arrangements are pending.
