A Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) firefighter died Monday, nearly a week after he suffered a medical emergency while on duty.

Fire Engineer Neil Schnaible suffered a heart attack while he was at work on April 29, according to the Tahoe Daily Tribune. During the medical incident, he fell and struck his head, causing bain bleeds.

Fellow firefighters were able to restore Schnaible's pulse with treatment and he was rushed to Renown Medical Center.

His wife and daughter were out of the country when he was stricken.

“Engineer Schnaible served the Lake Valley Fire Protection District and the community of South Lake Tahoe with honor, distinction, and unwavering dedication. He exemplified the highest ideals of the fire service – courage, professionalism, and a selfless commitment to protecting lives and property. His service to this District and to this community will never be forgotten,”  LVFPD Fire Chief John McNamara shared in a statement.

Schnaible was registered as an organ donor.

"Neil’s last wish was to be an organ donor, even in death. He is giving life and a second chance to so many people across the country. That is what he wanted. We should all strive to be a little more like Neil," McNamara said.
