A volunteer firefighter died Friday following an accident that happened while he was responding to a call.

Robert “Bobby” Reider, 23, of the Malaga Volunteer Fire Company, passed away on Friday, nearly two weeks after the single-vehicle accident, the department said in a statement.

Reider was traveling on Route 47 in the Malaga section of Franklin Township, Gloucester County, on Saturday, June, 27, when the crash occurred. His service vehicle crashed after leaving the roadway, the department said.

Emergency crews extricated Reider from the vehicle and he was flown to Cooper University Hospital in Camden. At the time of his death, he was still at the hospital being treated for traumatic injuries, the fire department said.

He was pronounced dead about 4:30 a.m. on Friday, according to the Malaga Volunteer Fire Company.

Reider joined the volunteer department as a junior firefighter at the age of 16. He later went on to earn a certificate of completion from the Fire 1 at Salem County Fire Academy.

“His service and dedication will never be forgotten,” the fire department said in a statement. “Year after year, Bobby had exemplary attendance at calls, drills and meetings. His heart and passion for community service was one of a kind.”

The Franklin Township Police Department also released a statement on his passing on Friday.

“The Franklin Township Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family of Fire Fighter Bobby Reider and the members of the Malaga Fire Company as they mourn the loss of their loved one,” the police department said.

The Malaga Volunteer Fire Company said it will share funeral information when it becomes available.
