A Council Bluffs firefighter died Thursday, days after he suffered a medical emergency while responding to a structure fire.
The Council Bluffs Fire Department shared this afternoon that Firefighter/Medic Charles Jones died earlier in the day.
Jones, a 19-year veteran of the department, was stricken while responding to a structure fire on Monday.
“Charles Jones dedicated 19 years of his life to protecting and serving this community. His passing is a tremendous loss for our entire department,” Chief Robert Schoening said in a statement. “We are grateful for his service, his friendship, and the lasting impact he made on those who had the privilege of working alongside him.”
Schoening said Jones was known for helping residents during their most difficult moments.
“The loss of firefighter Charles Jones is heartbreaking for our entire Council Bluffs community,” Mayor Jill Shudak said. “Charles dedicated himself to serving and protecting others, answering a calling that requires courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to those around him.”
