Fallen Durham, NC, Firefighter Remembered for 'unyielding desire to master his craft'

Andrew Brokes, who joined the Durham Fire Department 17 months ago, had a strong passion for being a firefighter.

Durham fire officials said the firefighter who died early Thursday morning in a commercial building fire was on the job less than two years.

Firefighter Andrew Brokes was killed when the roof collapsed while he was searching for victims inside the building, which had been converted into a residence.

Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II said the Brokes started with the department on May 5, 2025.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community,” said Zoldos. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and his colleagues, and we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. The department is standing with and supporting his family in every possible way.”

Brokes joined the fire service in February 2022, first serving with the Swepsonville Fire Department, where he remained as a part-time firefighter after being hired by Durham.

"Andrew possessed a true thirst for knowledge. He had an unyielding desire to master his craft, continually learning, pushing his limits, and striving to be the absolute best firefighter he could be," Swepsonville Fire Department posted on social media. "While our photographs might only capture his trademark stern look, we will forever carry the memory of his infectious smile and the warmth he brought to the station.

Two other firefighters were injured during the fire and hospitalized at Duke Medical Center.

Zoldos said they are expected to fully recover from their injuries.

"This loss is felt across our entire department. Firefighters step into unpredictable situations every day in service to others, and Firefighter Brokes embodied that calling with honor," Zoldos said.
