The pilot of an Arizona firefighting helicopter died after his aircraft crashed near a wildfire Tuesday.
Brian Boatman, 37, was in a helicopter that was conducting firefighting operations for the Polles Fire in the Payson area, officials told KNVX-TV. Boatman was the only person in the helicopter.
“This tragic loss is a reminder of the ever-present dangers faced by those battling wildfires,” Gov. Doug Ducey said in a statement. “As a helicopter pilot, Bryan Boatman was carrying out a service to the people of Arizona alongside the men and women fighting the Polles Fire. He performed his duty with honor and bravery, and it will be remembered as such by our state. My deepest condolences go out to Bryan’s family and loved ones. Our prayers are with them and all of Arizona’s wildland firefighters working day and night to keep us safe.”
The cause of the helicopter crash has yet to be determined, according to KNVX. The crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
The Polles Fire has burned through more than 575 acres west of Payson. Zero percent of the wildfire has been contained, but the blaze is not threatening any homes or populated areas.
