Fire and rescue crews in Southwest Louisiana are mourning the loss of a firefighter killed while responding to a call.
Beauregard Fire Protection District Firefighter Jonathan Ashworth, 23, died of injuries sustained when his 2017 Ford F-150 hit a tree as he was headed to an EMS call.
He and Tabitha Ashworth, also a firefighter, were driving in dense fog when he failed to negotiate a turn, and the truck veered off the road where it struck several trees, KPLC reported.
Jonathan was pronounced dead at the scene while Tabitha suffered minor injuries.
“He was the best person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was an asset to his community, his family, and this department. His smile and distinct voice will be missed,” Beauregard Fire Chief Eric Stracener said in a statement.
He had served as a firefighter/operator since Nov. 14, 2018.
Several Southwest Louisiana fire departments offered prayers and condolences to Ashworth’s family.
The Houston River Fire Department said flags will be flown at half-staff and asks for prayers for Ashworth’s family, the fire department, and all responders.
