Firefighters in Moncks Corner are mourning the loss of a valuable, dedicated member.
Deputy Chief Jimmy Townsend died of an apparent heart-related incident within five hours of responding to an incident, Central Berkeley Fire/EMS Assistant Chief Colt Roy told WCBD.
In November, Townsend would have celebrated his 35th year of service to the community.
“Jimmy was a staple. He was extremely knowledgeable, and he shared that knowledge with anybody. He would do anything to help,” said Roy.
“He didn’t have that quit bone in his body. He just kept going and helping people and serving the community. That’s what he was all about, serving his fellow man, serving his brothers and sisters. And, that’s one of the things that we can all really take away,” Roy said.
He went on to explain an example: “We were at a house fire, and there was a little bit of fire coming out of the eaves. He was on the outside of the fire, and not being one just to stand around and do nothing, he looked around, and there was a garden hose, and he turned the garden hose on, and I’ve got a picture of him spraying the fire coming out of the eaves with the garden hose. And, you know, it’s kind of a funny thing to look back on."
