Longtime Hamilton, MI, Fire Chief Struck on Highway, Dies

Hamilton Fire Chief David Haverdink, 74, led the department for more than 40 years.

Fire, rescue and law enforcement officers in west Michigan are mourning the tragic loss of  a longtime chief and former sheriff.

Hamilton Fire Chief David Haverdink, 74, was hit by a vehicle on a highway while assisting at an incident scene on Dec. 23. 

On Christmas, Haverdink died of his injuries at Michigan Health West, WOOD reported.

A member of the department for 51 years, he served as chief for more than 40 years.

Haverdink also was Allegan County Sheriff for eight years.

"Haverdink is widely respected throughout all of West Michigan, serving on numerous boards and organizations, and providing outstanding service to citizens throughout the (department's) coverage area," deputies wrote in a statement.

Funeral Services

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Jan. 5 at Central Wesleyan Church in Holland. Funeral services are set for 1 p.m. Jan. 6 at the church.
